Cold Welding

Cold welding, or contact welding, is a method of creating a very strong bond between two solids without the need for heat or melting at the joint. When two surfaces are perfectly flat, clean, and free of any contamination, bringing them close together in a vacuum forms a very strong bond between them. This phenomenon occurs when the atoms of the two pieces are sufficiently close and no intervening layer exists. In this state, the atoms can bond with each other.

In the field of instrumentation (equipment for measuring physical quantities), at points where a tube (pipe) needs to be connected to a tank, pipe, measuring device, etc., the tube is fitted with a threaded connector, allowing it to be attached to the threaded fitting at the desired location.

In this case, the threaded tube can be connected to the threaded fitting on the tank, pipe, measuring device, etc., eliminating the need for hot welding between the tube and the tank. The only concern in this setup is the creation of a cold joint between the tube, sealing elements, and the nut on the tube connector, which can prevent reassembly after installation and may lead to equipment damage. This phenomenon occurs when the materials used in all sealing elements and the tube are the same. Veelok, a supplier of instrumentation fittings, prevents this issue by silver-plating the internal surfaces of the nut and ferrules. After tightening, a layer of silver forms between the steel surfaces, preventing cold welding. This also ensures that reassembly at the tube connector is always possible.

Important Points When Connecting a Tube to a Connector:

First, thoroughly clean the tube surface from any contamination, grease, and even dust.

The tube surface must be completely uniform and free of scratches, rust, and dents.

The nut should be tightened within a range of 400 to 700 degrees and must be observed by the user.
