Lightning protection
Lightning arrester in instrumentation
A surge arrester or lightning arrester in electrical networks is used to protect equipment from damage caused by sudden overvoltages, such as lightning strikes and electrical surges.
How does a surge arrester work?
The operating mechanism of surge arresters is such that, as long as there is no surge voltage in the system,
In this way, other equipment in the system is not exposed to such overvoltages and remains undamaged.
If instrumentation equipment, such as transmitters, has built-in lightning protection, only the protection module is safeguarded, while other components, such as the display, may still be damaged.
After a sudden overvoltage event, the equipment must be serviced again and any damaged components replaced.
Protectors are available in two types:
Installation on-site and in open environments
Installation in the control room
