All materials are affected by temperature, and for this reason, various instruments exist to measure temperature. The basic principle of early thermometers was the change in volume of gases or liquids with temperature variation, and this principle is still used in some temperature measurement instruments.

The mercury thermometer is a familiar example of temperature measurement devices using this mechanism. An increase in temperature causes the mercury to expand, raising the height of the mercury column. These thermometers have a limited measurement range, and their output cannot be used in control systems. Therefore, the use of these thermometers is not common in industry.
