Temperature Transmitter

A temperature transmitter, or temperature converter, is one of the temperature measurement devices. This device converts the temperature measured by a temperature sensor, such as a thermocouple, into a standard transferable quantity. The word “transmitter” is derived from the combination of two words: TRANSFER + METER, meaning a device that can measure a physical quantity (METERING) and transfer it to a remote location, such as a control room (TRANSFER). A temperature transducer, in the field of instrumentation, refers to a device that converts one of the physical parameters, such as temperature, pressure, fluid flow, humidity, speed, level or height of materials in a tank, weight, etc., into a standard signal, such as 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V, and it also has the capability to transmit the signal in a two-wire or powered loop configuration. This device can be electronic or pneumatic. In both cases, the transmitted signal is standardized and understandable by devices that are part of a control loop.

Temperature transmitters are divided into two categories based on their installation method.

1- Head-Mounted Temperature Transmitter: A head-mounted temperature transmitter is placed inside the housing at the top of the sensor and is known as a head-mounted type.

2- Rail-Mounted Temperature Transmitter: Rail-mounted temperature transmitters are installed inside a panel and on rails, and are known as rail-mounted type.

Passive (Inactive) Transmitter: This type of transmitter, which is one of the most widely used transmitters, does not have a separate power supply path and receives the required supply voltage from the same output lines of peripheral devices such as an RTU or PLC. It then sends the measured quantity as a standard current through the output lines. This eliminates the need for additional wiring for power in measurement devices and allows the transmitter to be powered through its connected output lines without requiring a separate power source.

Active Transmitter: This type of industrial transmitter sends the measured quantity as a standard 4 to 20 mA current over two lines, but requires a separate power supply for proper operation, which must be provided and delivered to the device. Therefore, this type of transmitter does not save on wiring and does not have the advantages of a passive transmitter.
