Safety Valve

Safety valves are pressure-operated valves designed to open when the pressure exceeds a predetermined limit, allowing the release of material to restore normal pressure. For example, in tank-type water heaters, boilers, and pressurized tanks, safety valves are installed at the top of the tank to prevent explosions caused by excessive temperature or pressure. Safety valves are selected not only to open at a specific pressure but also to have sufficient capacity to release large amounts of liquid or gas that have expanded or changed phase due to heat. Depending on the type of fluid (gas or liquid) and application, safety or relief valves are manufactured with different mechanisms. Valves handling liquid are commonly referred to as relief valves.
