Level transmitters are used for monitoring or transmitting information about the material height in tanks. Depending on the tank conditions—such as pressure, operating temperature, presence of vapors, or the type of material, whether liquid, powder, or granular—different mechanisms can be employed. The most common method for measuring tank levels, especially in pressurized tanks, is using a differential pressure transmitter. In many other cases, such as for powders, bitumen, and similar materials, radar transmitters can also be used.

As we know, pressure can be measured using manometers or by calculating the pressure of a liquid column. In level sensors that operate based on pressure measurement, the liquid height in the tank can be determined using the following relationship, by measuring the pressure and knowing the fluid density (ρ):
Pabs=P+(ρ*g*H)
In this relationship, P represents the pressure of gases and vapors above the tank, which, in open-top tanks, equals the atmospheric pressure. To calculate the liquid height in a tank using this method, both the liquid column pressure and the pressure above the tank must be measured. For this purpose, differential pressure transmitters have been developed, which measure the pressure difference in the tank and provide a signal proportional to the liquid height.

The pressure measured in this method is the static pressure of the liquid at rest in the tank. Therefore, this method is also referred to as hydrostatic level measurement. Measuring the level using this method is straightforward, and these sensors have become widely used due to their simplicity and low cost.
