Positioners can be mechanical, pneumatic, or electric, and they increase the pulse transfer speed (3 to 15 psi). Based on the feedback received from the valve position, the positioner is responsible for controlling the valve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <span dir=\"LTR\">positioner<\/span> amplifies the signal sent from the controller and transmits it to the <span dir=\"LTR\">actuator<\/span>. It also eliminates any discrepancy between the actual valve position and the position commanded by the controller, ensuring the valve reaches the correct commanded position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A <span dir=\"LTR\">positioner<\/span> is required in some actuators to make the actuator compatible with the instrumentation pressure signal or to provide specific operational stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <span dir=\"LTR\">positioner<\/span> includes a set pressure, a <span dir=\"LTR\">supply<\/span> pressure, and an <span dir=\"LTR\">output<\/span> pressure. The output pressure from the <span dir=\"LTR\">I\/P<\/span> (current-to-pneumatic signal converter) serves as the set pressure for the <span dir=\"LTR\">positioner<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Components of a Positioner (<span dir=\"LTR\">Positioner Components<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <span dir=\"LTR\">positioner<\/span> consists of components such as the <span dir=\"LTR\">bellows<\/span> or <span dir=\"LTR\">spool valve<\/span>, which receives the signal from the controller; the link or balance rod, which compares the received signal with the changed position of the valve <span dir=\"LTR\">stem<\/span>; the power valve, also known as a relay or booster, which amplifies the signal from the controller; and the <span dir=\"LTR\">cam<\/span>, which defines the relationship between the control valve plug position and the controller\u2019s signal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"LTR\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span dir=\"LTR\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span dir=\"LTR\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dfc-co.com\/Files\/1\/positioner-dfc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"385\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span dir=\"LTR\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The signal from the controller causes movement of the <span dir=\"LTR\">bellows<\/span>, and any pressure imbalance changes the distance between the <span dir=\"LTR\">flopper<\/span> and the nozzle. As a result, the pressure on the output relay diaphragm changes, which in turn alters the relay output pressure, correcting the valve position. This compensation, however, is only possible for up to 20% deviation from the actual position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">When using a <span dir=\"LTR\">positioner<\/span>, attention should be paid to factors such as: 1) high turbulence forces caused by large valve sizes, high pressure drops, or a combination of both; 2) long transmission lines between the controller and the control valve, which can result in a <span dir=\"LTR\">time lag<\/span>; 3) viscous (<span dir=\"LTR\">viscous<\/span>) fluids, solid-bearing fluids, or fluids that tend to close the valve; 4) high pressure requiring unusually tight packing to prevent stem leakage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">1- Pneumatic Positioners (<span dir=\"LTR\">Pneumatic Positioner<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The signal used in this type of positioner is typically 3\u201315 <span dir=\"LTR\">PSIG<\/span>. This positioner uses the main air line for supply, and based on the pneumatic signal received from the controller, it sends the necessary command to the actuator to open or close the valve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">2 \u2013 Current-to-Pneumatic and Pneumatic-to-Current Positioners (<span dir=\"LTR\">I\/P<\/span>):<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this type of positioner, the electrical signal from the controller is used to actuate the device, and the corresponding output air is applied to the valve actuator.\u00a0<span dir=\"LTR\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">3 \u2013 Smart or Digital Positioners (<span dir=\"LTR\">Digital Positioner<\/span>):<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">These positioners operate similarly to the previous type, with the difference that instead of using a 4\u201320 mA signal for actuation, they use digital signals. These signals are sent digitally and encoded from the controller to the positioner, which then applies the output air to the actuator according to the received logic. The signal type may use protocols such as <span dir=\"LTR\">HART<\/span> or <span dir=\"LTR\">FIELDBUS<\/span>. For example, if the controller\u2019s output signal is <span dir=\"LTR\">HART<\/span>, the positioner must support this protocol.
