When two surfaces are perfectly flat, clean, and free of any contamination, bringing them close together in a vacuum forms a very strong bond between them. This phenomenon occurs when the atoms of the two pieces are sufficiently close and no intervening layer exists. The only concern in this setup is the creation of a cold joint between the tube, sealing elements, and the nut on the tube connector, which can prevent reassembly after installation and may lead to equipment damage. This phenomenon occurs when the materials used in all sealing elements and the tube are the same. Veelok, a supplier of instrumentation fittings, prevents this issue by silver-plating the internal surfaces of the nut and ferrules. After tightening, a layer of silver forms between the steel surfaces, preventing cold welding.
