Both the words "Pipe" and "Tube" mean "tube," but "Pipe" is used for transferring fluid from one point to another over a relatively long distance, while "Tube" is used for circulating fluid within a limited system or machine, for energy transfer, and in instrumentation systems.

What is a Tube?

Tubes are typically used for applications involving heat transfer, high pressures, and high temperatures, and they are resistant to creep. They are used in boilers, oil furnaces, and heat exchangers. When selecting stainless steel tubes, the type of material for the intended application must be considered. The most commonly used tubes include SS316 for corrosive environments, SS304 for environments such as seawater or less corrosive conditions, and heat-resistant stainless steel tubes. Additionally, the price of stainless steel tubes is higher than that of stainless steel pipes because tubes are manufactured with finer precision and tighter dimensional accuracy. Tubes are seamless and are usually produced up to 12 inches in size. Tubes do not have a fixed length, whereas pipes have a specified length. The wall thickness of tubes is uniform along their entire length, while pipes have dimensional tolerances along their length.

The nominal diameter of the tubes is equal to their outer diameter..

For example, a ¾ inch tube has an outer diameter of ¾ inch OD, and a 6 inch tube has an outer diameter of 6 inches.

Tube wall thickness is specified by BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge).

Tube gauges start from 00 (the thickest, 9 mm) and go down to 36 (the thinnest, 0.1 mm).

As the BWG (tube gauge) number increases, the tube wall thickness decreases.
